League One

Introduction

League One is the second-highest division of the English Football League and the third tier overall in the English football league system. It is known as Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes.

The league was formed in 2004 as a rebrand of the Football League Second Division, which itself was a rebrand of the Football League Third Division before the 1992 launch of the Premier League.

The current champions are Rotherham United, who won the title in the 2022-23 season.

Teams

There are 24 teams in League One. The teams for the 2023-24 season are:

• Fleetwood Town

Format

The league season runs from August to May. Each team plays each other team twice, once at home and once away.

The top two teams in the league are automatically promoted to the Championship. The third-placed team goes into the play-offs, along with the winners of the two League Two play-off semi-finals. The winner of the play-offs is also promoted to the Championship.

The bottom four teams in the league are automatically relegated to League Two.
