Skelmanthorpe 1 vs 17 Almondbury Lions under 11

The young Lions today made the short trip to Shelley to play Skelmanthorpe for their third game of the season and with confidence high after their unbeaten start to the season. The boys were looking to make it three in a row. After an eventful few minutes trying to park in the packed stadium, (my advice is always check your mirrors before reversing) the game kicked off on time at 10.30. The pitch looked in excellent condition even though it was covered in early morning dew. Team manager Graham McDonald’s starting nine was as follows.

There are many quotes in life and football, such as Kittens don’t mess with cats, and just because you’re lying in the gutter doesn’t mean you can’t look at the stars. As a contest this game was over in the first ten minutes with the young boys from Almondbury finding themselves 5-0 to the good, with every attack the young lions found the back of the net against what was a very poor team, with Cain Wilkinson getting a hat trick on the stroke of half time and the teams 8th to go along with Harry Smith scoring 2, Alex MacDonald (man of the match), Aidan Wilkinson and Jacob Costello also finding the net. There can’t have been many easier half time team talks given this weekend.

Within 6 minutes of the restart Jacob Costello had his hat trick and Luke Broadbent had also got on the score sheet making it 11-0, but then on 38 minutes disaster struck a long punt up field from the home team’s keeper Stevie Wonder somehow managed to evade everyone and left with a simple tap in Skelmanthorpe had pulled one back, but the home team’s come back was quickly quashed as Cain Wilkinson got his 4th Harry Smith got his 3rd, 4th and 5th making it 15-1 to the young lion. As the game reached full time there was still time for an own goal after good work by Briayar and with the last kick of the game Billy Farley wrapped things up with a neat finish.
