Ex-Diamond Kyle MacDonald grabbed a hat-trick as Hamilton secured a reversal of the scoreline from the last Lanarkshire derby on a disastrous day for Airdrie.
Much has changed at both clubs since the Diamonds eased to a 4-0 win in November’s Scottish Cup tie, but it was Accies who grabbed the headlines this time around.
Robbie Mahon and Lewis Gibson retained their places after impressive showings in Tuesday night’s KDM Evolution Trophy win over Dumbarton, but the pack was otherwise reshuffled with eight changes and a spot on the bench for new signing Callum Burnside. Dapo Mebude and Divine Iserhienrhien missed out through injury.
There was a familiar look about the visiting line-up, with Dean Lyness, Dom Thomas and Andy Ryan joining MacDonald as the ex-Airdrie contingent.
Early corners for either side came to nothing, but Hamilton went close from a sixth-minute free-kick, a header flying past the post after a good delivery from the left.
Stuart McKinstry was robbed of possession by Dylan MacDonald before he could get a shot away on nine minutes, but it didn’t take much longer for the home side to find the net, the visiting defence static as a cutback found MacDonald. There was a touch of fortune about the finish as a deflection took the ball away from the diving Jamie Sneddon.
Good play on the left from MacDonald almost led to a quick second, but his chipped cross on 16 minutes went behind.
A short passback almost put Airdrie in trouble three minutes later, but Sneddon was out quickly to deny Cian Newbury with a great save.
Airdrie started to make inroads midway through the half, Gavin Gallagher seeing a curling effort held by Lyness before good play by Gibson almost teed up an incisive pass, but the home defence blocked well.
Ryan’s forward runs were giving the home midfield a target to aim for, and the striker looked set to finish on 27 minutes only to be denied by an excellent sliding challenge from Sam Fisher.
Tony Gallacher hit the side netting after connecting with a 28th-minute corner, and two corners at the other end caused problems for Lyness, but on both occasions the ball was smuggled behind.
Ryan sent a close-range header over the bar just after the half-hour, with Airdrie retaliating through Gibson who screwed a low effort wide of the post.
Matty Yates headed wide after Gallagher had seen his shot charged down as play moved into the final ten minutes of the opening period.
Craig Ross headed wide from a Mahon corner before Kian Taylor’s cross was booted clear, but Ryan again showed his threat as he chased another long ball, marshalled well on this occasion by Adam Devine.
Four minutes into the second half MacDonald grabbed his and Hamilton’s second, and there was no good fortune involved this time as the former Airdrie man spun on the corner of the box and lofted a perfectly weighted chip into the top corner.
Airdrie made a triple-change in an effort to turn things round, and could perhaps have been facing ten men after Kai Smutek launched an off-the-ball kick at Liam McLeish, but referee Sean Murdoch settled for a yellow card.
Lyness held a McLeish effort after the striker had initially driven his 57th-minute free-kick into the defensive wall, and the goalkeeper was Hamilton’s hero two minutes later as he got down to pull off an incredible stop, denying Burnside a debut goal.
Two Hamilton efforts went wide of the target as they sought to take advantage of gaps left by the Diamonds as they chased the game, with Taylor firing wide at the other end as Burnside continued to provide a much-needed spark.
Some resolute defending by the home side stopped Airdrie’s progress as they attacked down both flanks, but Darian McKinnon’s side still looked dangerous on the break, Ryan forcing a fingertip save from Sneddon with an angled drive with ten minutes remaining.
There wasn’t much respite for the Diamonds, as the resultant corner was headed home at the back post by Smutek.
Lyness gathered a MacDonald cross as the match looked set to fizzle out, but there was time for the hosts to grab a fourth, substitute Steven Bradley going down under Kwame Boateng’s touch and MacDonald tucking away the spot-kick to complete his hat-trick.
A derby to forget for the Diamonds, who have plenty to work on ahead of the visit of Ross County in a week’s time.
