? FIRST HALF
Epstein began brightly, controlling possession and looking to push forward. Defib set up defensively, with Alex Attwell leading the backline—his positioning and reading of the game kept the opposition at bay early on. Harvey Kerslake provided good protection in midfield, using his strength to win challenges and cover whenever needed.
Mckenzie Jones was mostly stuck in defensive duties, not quite at his sharpest after a pre-match drink, while debutant Declan Mennell took time to adjust to the pace and fitness demands, though he showed promising link-up play when he got into rhythm.
The game sparked into life when Matthew Hughes came off the bench—just 10 seconds later, he pounced on a mix-up between Epstein’s keeper and defence, slotting calmly into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. Tom Kennett soon added some much-needed composure and accurate passing, while Aidan Gigg brought fresh energy and constant pressing.
The match then turned physical. An Epstein player lost his cool, first launching a dangerous high challenge that nearly caught Hari Morgan, who had already made several smart one-on-one saves. The same player then slid in recklessly, catching Morgan hard on the knee—though the keeper was able to continue. Epstein levelled with a stunning toe-poke strike into the top corner. Tensions flared again: after another heavy challenge, Matthew declared “I’m havin’ him”, and moments later the same opponent slammed him to the ground in a blatant wrestling-style move—straight red card, leaving Epstein down to four men. Half-time: 1-1.
? SECOND HALF
Even with a man advantage, Defib struggled to take control. Their passing was inconsistent, relying too much on long balls and often giving possession away cheaply. Epstein, despite their numbers, remained organised and dangerous on the break—only good defending from Defib and wasteful finishing from the visitors kept the scores level.
As the half wore on, Defib settled and began to create openings. Mckenzie Jones started to cause real problems running at their tired defence, forcing a goal-line clearance with one good effort. Defib stayed solid at the back, but their attacking play remained disjointed and lacked real quality.
Late in the game, a golden chance fell to Alex Attwell—with the goal at his mercy and defenders backing off, he only needed to pick his spot, but instead struck the ball straight at the keeper. No further goals followed, and the game finished 1-1.
?? MAN OF THE MATCH
Matthew Hughes – A first for the club: scoring within seconds of coming on, standing up to the opposition’s rough tactics, and playing a key role in their player being sent off. He worked hard throughout and fully earns the award.
