The NDYFL was founded in 1947 by a group of local football enthusiasts who wanted to provide more opportunities for youngsters to play the game. The league started with just a few teams and has grown steadily over the years. In 1997, the league affiliated to the Derbyshire County Football Association, which gave it access to more funding and resources.

The NDYFL has a long and proud history of providing opportunities for youngsters to play football. Many former NDYFL players have gone on to play professional football, including David Nugent, Ashley Young, and Jack Grealish.
