About Premiership

Introduction

The Premiership is an amateur football league in Scotland. It is the top tier of the Scottish football league system, and consists of 12 teams.

The league was founded in 2013, when the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League merged into the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).

The current champions of the Premiership are Celtic, who have won the title 55 times.

Qualification

To qualify for the Premiership, a team must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member of the SPFL
  • Have a stadium with a minimum capacity of 6,000
  • Have under-soil heating
  • Be financially sound

Season structure

The Premiership season runs from August to May. Each team plays each other team twice, once at home and once away.

The top team at the end of the season is the champion, and the bottom three teams are relegated to the Scottish Championship.
