The Hunter Football League was founded in 1972 by a group of local football enthusiasts. The inaugural season had six clubs: Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Maitland, Newcastle, Singleton, and West Wallsend.

The 2023 season is the 51st season of the Hunter Football League. The regular season began on April 9 and will conclude on September 10.
The top four teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the finals series. The finals series will be played in a knock-out format.
