BRNESC FC First XI

The club was formed in 1905 by railway workers, under the name Aintree Locomotives (Aintree Loco). Games were originally played on Wednesdays, then Saturdays, with a Sunday team starting in 1968. In 1920 the club moved to Melling Road. Aptly enough, the facilities of a bar and changing rooms were in an old railway carriage by the bowling green. In 1942 the ground was taken over by the American Army who used it to store tank parts. The club was moved to the far side of Warbreck Moor by the present line to Ormskirk where it remained until the return to Melling Road in 1950. Before they departed the Americans re-laid the pitch and installed an up to date draining system. In 1954 after rail nationalisation, the social club was formed and the club name changed to British Rail North End Social Club. Over the years many have given their time to the club in particular Ralf Finlayson, “Wacca” as he was know, who was with the club for over 50 years from 1934 until his death in 1990. Sid Hughes who was another great club man from 1942 until his death (aged 78) in 2001. Both these men filled all the positions within the club and were the groundsmen who were responsible for the excellent pitches at Melling Road. George Riley, secretary from 1963 – 1998 is now Chairman of the club. Frank Connor was the clubs most successful manager from 1977 until his death in 1998, putting sides together that went on to win many trophies.
