Welcome to BARNSTONEWORTH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB PRESIDENT: MICHAEL PALIN CBE When the days of playing competitive Saturday and Sunday league football slowly ground to halt and most hung up their boots for good, there was however a hard core who still wanted play on, more for fun and fitness really. So we decided to play 7-a-side football once a week on the astro pitches at Neston Recreation Centre every Thursday. For a considerable period of time the numbers were good, but towards the end of 2005 numbers started to dwindle and we were forced to disband and relinquish our religious Thursday 8pm slot. After going cold turkey for nearly three years, unfortunately the addiction of playing football was far too great and we regrouped in 2009 to play 7-a-side football against FC Pensby on Tuesday evenings on the 3G pitch at Pensby Boys School. For a period of time this was great, then the reality kicked in… we weren’t young men any more, we were old, fat and slow and getting continually thrashed by young whippets every week wasn’t our idea of fun. It just so happened that on the opposite pitch were a group of guys of a similar age and quality. As they always seemed to be short in numbers we asked their organiser, John McGivern if he would mind us joining them. The response from John was positive and our regular Tuesday night football continued. After 6 months and an influx players, a couple of bright sparks had the idea of starting a veterans team, did the necessary research, and subsequently we formed Barnstoneworth United and entered the Cheshire Veterans League, Division 3 in 2010. Training still continues every Tuesday at Pensby Boys School from 7-8pm followed by a few healthy beers in the Pensby Hotel. The league hosts 6 Divisions: Premiership, 1 , 2, 3 and O45's and operates a RORO system with a maximum of 5 substitutes. We play on average a minimum of 15 games a year plus cup games, Internationals and friendlies. Home games are played at Pensby Sports Complex, Pensby and kick off time is usually 11am. After every home game we are obliged to support one of our sponsors, The Pensby Hotel. The league stipulates that the minimum playing age is 35 and our current players range from 35-54. Match fees are £5 per game and on away games all drivers are exempt from match fees and receive £5 towards petrol.
