The SSAFC started their 2017/18 campaign with a tough encounter away at Watford in what turned out to be an 8 goal thriller.

The SSAFC had a debutant in goal in young George Main and the youngster was beaten early when Watford's striker nipped ahead of him and passed into an empty net. The SSAFC started rusty but had chances but none which tested the keeper.

The goal then came when the ball was cleared out to Woolf who's lofted ball over the top found an advance Swales who sprung the offside trap and lobbed the keeper making it 1-1.

The game was a scrappy affair on what was a hard 3G surface for both sides but chances weren't coming. Watford then took the lead when a corner found their centre midfield who powerfully headed home.

It became 3-1 before half time with a copy of the second goal, the ball wasn't cleared from the corner and the cross in found an unmarked Watford player who headed home.

Half time came and the SSAFC needed to re-group but it started horribly and Watford got a 4th goal. Frustrating from the SSAFC who had to do something about it.

The switch from 4 at the back to 3 worked a treat as the SSAFC started pressuring up top, Wedge blasting an effort wide before the comeback was on.Good build up play from Wedge & Bell found Pickett who got lucky with his touch but made no mistake to slot home and make it 4-2.

It became 4-3 when an SSAFC corner was cleared but only to the returning Dean Binns who's cross missed everyone and the keeper parried it before the ball came off Jonni Wedge to make it a final frantic few minutes.

Wedge wasn't to be denied as the SSAFC with a minute to go got a corner, Etheridge whipped it in and Wedge powerfully headed goalwards which the keeper saved but only back to Wedge who smashed it home making it 4-4 and gaining an unlikely result for the SSAFC!
