With 3 minutes of normal time to go, Castle Donnington were correctly awarded a penalty. Bate held the Colts cup run in his hands. Up stepped the star striker and hammered it. Bate parried the shot, and was quickly up on his feet to put the striker off the rebound. Minutes (seemed like hours) later the tie was over, and the Colts were through to the Cup Final.
It was hard work for the Colts. The usual slow start cost them a goal early on, when a long through ball was missed by the defence and the striker coolly lobbed over Bate. The lead didn't last long, Welsh drawing them level with a crisp shot following good team work.
Donnington continued to cause problems with the long ball over the top and Bate was kept busy kicking and collecting. Crowder was unlucky not to score when he first hit the bar and then post. Hunt narrowly wide before he finished off the move of the match that saw Donnington ripped open by the Colts passing.
And that is how it stayed. Although Donnington had few clear chances, the Colts missed theirs and as time pressed on, the team, supporters and management got nervy.
Another cup final to look forward to and the opponents will be Derwent. There is nothing to fear.
