The Colts achieved back to back Championship titles after beating Wirksworth 5-0.
They started off brightly, having three half chances in the first few minutes. Welsh was at his best, thundering into a 50-50 with the goalkeeper and coming out on top. He dusted himself down and fired into the empty net. ‘Foul’ cried the opposition but the Ref was correct with his decision.
For the remainder of the half, the Colts dominated but could not get that second goal. Things were a bit nervy whenever Wirksworth pressed forward but Bate had little to do. McLaughlin committed a foul on the edge of the area and unbeknown to anyone, taw his triceps. He told no-one and carried on playing.
The second half was all about the Colts. Just after the restart, Birks seized on a defensive mistake and crossed into the box. Hunt turned and hit his shot first time perfectly into the bottom corner. Nerves were beginning to disappear and the contest was settled shortly after. Welsh tried from distance and according to him, the shot was going into the top corner, before a deflection directed it into the net.
Crowder got the fourth. Hunt collected the ball and fed a delicious through ball for him. His first touch was sublime, the finish past the keeper, exquisite.
To cap of a fine personal season, Vardy lashed a half volley from 25yards that almost broke the back of the net.
The Colts ran down the clock. Bate finally had a make a save of note at his near post. The defenders put the effort in and cleared lines.
The final whistle brought relief and amazement. How can little South Normanton win the League title?
Congratulations to all. A monumental effort. So, so proud
