Five goals all worthy of being contenders for goal of the season, together with a world class save from Bate, saw the Colts beat Belper Sports convincingly. Had it not been for the Belper keeper, the score could have been 15.
It was hard going early on, with the ball bouncing around and the uneven surface causing a few issues. Hunt opened up the scoring with a superb shot over the advancing keeper. The score remained 1-0 till half time. Belper had threatened but the defence held firm.
The second half was almost one way traffic. Birks scored the second, dribbling his way pass three players before hammering home. An enormous cheer from the stands echoed around the ground as we all celebrated his first goal since his injury nightmare.
Crowder got the third, scooping the ball over the keeper from a beautiful Hunt cross. Crowder then scored the fourth, picking his spot after being put through by Welsh. Welsh added the fifth, controlling and turning to hit a half volley past a desperate keeper.
The goals don’t tell the entire story though. Booth was excellent, particularly in the second half and McLaughlin hardly put a foot wrong. Vardy controlled midfield and Lowe seemed back to his sprightly best.
A great performance and confidence for next week when the two sides meet again.
