Newburgh Juniors 1 vs 1 Stirling University

Newburgh welcomed Stirling Uni to a sunny East Shore Park, looking to bounce back from their poor midweek loss to Thornton.

They started well and had a great chance to take the lead as Fyfe found space in the box, his shot struck the bottom of the post and bounced out to safety. However it was Stirling who took the lead against the run of play on 17th as Burgh failed to clear an attack properly and the ball fell to edge of the box where on the angle the cross shot took a wicked bounce, and despite getting a hand to it Chalmers couldn’t keep out.

Burgh continued to press looking for the equaliser and after Gay and McPhate had chances it was Fyfe who equalised just before half time. A well worked move saw Gay find Fyfe in the box, this time he made no mistake firing his shot past the keeper into the bottom corner.

The second half, Newburgh were the better side but chances at both ends were limited, then right at the end of the game Newburgh should have won it. After a couple of close calls after a couple of corners, Newburgh passed up a guilt edge chance when Hall found Gay in space one on one with the keeper, his half volley was saved, the ball looped onto the bar, the ball fell to Mayne who seemed to get the ball stuck under his feet and with the goal gaping he pulled his shot wide.

A good point for Burgh and a massive improvement from Thornton but they will go away thinking it should have been 3 points. Up next a big cup tie at home to Hill of Beath.
