In a tough headwind in the first half, up against unknown opposition in New Cross, newcomers to the league, we started brightly, forcing a goal through good combination play between the front 2 after 15 minutes.
New Cross had threatened early on top and were quickly level but in comical fashion as a throw in was allowed to bounce through the defence and keeper, a scramble ensued at the back post with Vale scuppering 2-3 chances to clear and the referee missing a clear handball in the build up to the equaliser.
10 minutes after the leveller, Vale should have been ahead again but a nice finish from Brom was harshly ruled offside despite being 2-3 yards on. It was clear that decisions were going to against us throughout this game.
No changes at half time, hoping to take advantage of the wind and get control of the ball but gaps in the middle of the park were exploited and New Cross ran into a 3-1 lead.
Changes were to made to bolster the midfield but it was in vain as we struggled to get hold of the ball and create much.
A switch to 3-5-2 in the final 10 led to New Cross adding a 4th on the counter.
A bad day at the office all round and not the start to the season we were hoping for.
