Some days you get up and just know its not going to be your day. And in the final league game of the season it was destined to not be Marist Casuals day. From the moment the referee failed to materialise and a bystander offered to fill in (admirably) there was a complete catalogue of Casuals cock ups to conclude the season.
But it didn’t start that way on the field. Cameron Dale scored after 25 minutes only for Castlecliff to come back against the run of play and equalise. The Paul Maguire’s in swinging corner beat the Castlecliff defence and crossed the line sending the Casuals into the sheds in the lead at half time. So far so good.
However, on the hour mark a pinpoint pass sent Jeramiah Waitokia of Castlecliff clear into a Casuals shaped defensive hole and he made no mistake levelling the scores.
And this is when the Casuals should have gone back to bed and written the day off. A sortie down the right flank from a Casuals wing man was halted leaving some gigantic gaps for Castlecliff to exploit and exploit them they did with the Blues scoring comfortable to lead 3-2 – and it stayed that way till the stand in referee blew her whistle to finish the league seasons for Castlecliff and the Casuals.
Castlecliff finished sixth on 18 points while the Casuals finished seventh on just the 7 points.
Another one of those days for Casuals – where it was not their day. Again.
