**SPARTA MOSHDOCK 4-1 FROLESWORTH UNITED **

FROLESWORTH United again surrendered a one-goal lead in typical fashion on Friday night, to ultimately succumb to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Sparta Moshdock.

Jack Boulton superbly netted his first goal of the season midway through the first-half to give the visitors a richly deserved lead, but the depleted Rabbits simply couldn’t maintain their endeavour throughout the 90 minutes.

Ben Harris faced a number of casualties heading to Horsewell Lane with Mark James, Greg Garner, Miles Splevings and Joe Cook all absent, providing the manager with a void of creative spark and he set his stall out with a negative 4-5-1 approach.

However, the Clarets began much the better side and frustrated the hosts throughout the opening half. Despite being renowned for their avant-garde manner, United threatened through rather more direct build-up play with Luke Evans’ long throw causing chaos in the hosts’ defence.

Having had the better of the opening exchanges, Frolesworth took the lead just after 20 minutes through centre-half Boulton. As Sparta failed to deal with another of Evans’ catapult throw-ins and the ball dropped out of the clouds, Boulton was underneath it to fire a splendid volley beneath the sprawling keeper.

The Country Boys now had a lead to protect and they nearly doubled their advantage just moments later. Boulton turned contributor on this occasion as Frolesworth continued their bombardment of the home side’s penalty area and Luke Hammond was desperately unlucky to see his effort trickle agonisingly across the goalmouth following a spillage from the goalkeeper.

Craig Bowbottom whistled a header narrowly wide of the far-post, meanwhile at the other end, Matt Errington had to be alert to brilliantly turn Aaron Preston’s vicious, swerving drive around the post.

But as the second-half commenced, the tide began to turn the way of the Greens, with Errington once again on hand to turn away a long-range effort low to his right.

The visitors were left to rue one more chance, however, as Martin Finnigan missed a gilt-edged opportunity as he got his technique all wrong onrushing into the area and blazed his volley high, wide and not at all handsome.

Buoyed by being let off the hook, Moshdock began to gain the ascendancy and their control of possession finally told when just before the hour-mark they hit back after Preston cushioned the ball down to his strike partner, who drove home from the edge of the box.

The game wouldn’t remain all-square for too long, however, as United couldn’t continue to repel the hosts. Frolesworth had done so well to block crosses and prevent the supply into the front two for the opening hour, but Jack Rudman failed to pressure the ball and allowed the striker to curl into the far corner.

United were left awestruck and Moshdock’s tails were up, but Preston put the game to bed with an astonishing strike, which made it three goals in 10 minutes for the home side.

Having been passive throughout the encounter, a moment of sublime skill put a dagger through Frolesworth hearts as he effortlessly flicked the ball over Martin Fennon’s head before unleashing a thunderous half-volley from fully 30-yards that flew past the surprised Errington.

Moshdock added another as the game petered out to add gloss to the scoreline and ultimately flatter the hosts, but Frolesworth are left with no time to mourn their defeat as they will have to negotiate their way around another difficult away trip to Horse on Sunday morning.
