AFC Ely 1 vs 2 Papworth Reserves

A day that started with two minutes silence for Remembrance Day, became a day to forget as AFC Ely slump to their fourth straight defeat.

Ely started the game well, weathering a brisk first five minute spell of possession from Papworth before taking a hold of the game. The scoring was opened in the 18th minute with Tom Goodjohn heading a peach of a cross from Vice-Captain James Gillett past the Papworth centerbacks, and running on to finish it from about 10 yards out.

Having lead the game for the best part of 45 minutes, Ely conceded two quick goals around the hour mark, and despite throwing everything to claw back a point proved too little too late, with Papworth time wasting tactics proving enough to hang on for the 3 points.

Having pointed out prior to the game that Papworth were not scoring much, but not conceding much either - it proved to be the case. With Ely wasteful in the final third, and Papworth clinical with the few chances they created playing a counter-attacking style.

Ely's man of the match as voted by the players this week was Tom Goodjohn who had to be substituted in the 86th minute with a tight hamstring.

Ely return to cup action next week in their second round match against an in-form Sawston United.
